Welcome. I’m Liz Marshall (she/her), LCSW, LICSW.

My approach as a therapist is relational and warm and I deeply honor the intentional time set aside by each of my clients and consultees to engage in the courageous work of change.

As a trauma-informed therapist, I work to co-create a compassionate and non-judgmental space and value offering transparency, power, and choice in our work together.

When people think about working through past difficult experiences, it can seem like a daunting task.

When you have experienced trauma of any kind (big T or little t), revisiting those memories is likely the last thing you want to do, yet living on-edge with flashbacks, nightmares, avoidance, & anxiety can be debilitating. One of the many reasons I love using the trauma treatment modalities that I do is that we don’t actually have to talk through through all the nitty-gritty intricate details of the past; in fact, research shows that talking through all the details of traumatic events makes our nervous systems much more overwhelmed. Instead, our work together is to notice the beliefs, emotional responses, and physical sensations that your body learned in the midst of those experiences and create space to discover new learning and responses.

My areas of experience and specialization include:

  • Religious/ Spiritual Abuse

  • Purity Culture Recovery

  • Sexual Trauma

  • Intimate Partner Abuse/ Domestic Violence

  • Childhood Abuse/Neglect

  • Vicarious Trauma & Burnout Support for Mental Health Professionals, Clergy/Spiritual Leaders, & First Responders

  • Highly Sensitive People

  • Human Trafficking

  • LGBTQIA Affirming Therapy

  • Chronic Illness & Medical Trauma

  • Disordered Eating

  • Grief & Loss

My BACKGROUNd

Prior to opening my own practice, I worked across several Harvard & Rutgers teaching hospitals on violence response teams providing crisis intervention, medical advocacy, and trauma therapy to survivors of intimate partner abuse, sexual abuse, human trafficking & community violence. In those roles, I also had the privilege of providing consultation and education to medical providers on best practices in trauma-informed care.

In addition to my therapy & consultation work, I am an Ordained Priest in the Episcopal Church (an open & affirming tradition). I have a passion & specialized skillset in supporting survivors of religious/spiritual trauma and equipping spiritual leaders & communities to implement trauma-informed care on individual & systemic levels.

I always welcome clients to bring religion/ spirituality into the therapy room as it is an important aspect of cultural identity, but will not bring it up unless you name it as important to you. I will never push any religious agenda in our work together as I believe that would perpetuate the dynamics of power and control that so many of my clients come to therapy to liberate themselves from. I start from a place of evidence-based, trauma-informed practice following the ethical standards of the Social Work Profession.
